She wrote the job listing herself. Seventeen criteria, each one specific enough to matter and vague enough to defend. Demonstrated capacity for independent judgment. Comfort with ambiguity. Evidence of principled disagreement with authority. She was proud of it. The listing described exactly the kind of person the department needed.

Six applicants. She read each one carefully, twice, making notes in the margins. The first was too deferential. The second had the credentials but wrote like someone performing competence rather than possessing it. The third was interesting but lacked institutional experience. The fourth contradicted himself on page two. The fifth was overqualified in ways that would become resentment. The sixth wrote beautifully but about the wrong things.

None of the six matched any of the seventeen.

She told the committee this with the confidence of someone delivering a diagnosis. "We'll need to re-post," she said. "The pool didn't produce a viable candidate."

Gerald, who had been on the committee for eleven years and would be on it for eleven more, asked to see the listing again. He read it slowly, the way he read everything, mouth slightly open, one finger tracking the lines.

"This is Rebecca," he said.

"Excuse me?"

"These seventeen criteria. This is a description of Rebecca Aldrin." He set the paper down. "You wrote a portrait."

She started to object but the objection had nowhere to land. Rebecca Aldrin had held the position for nine years before leaving for a fellowship she never returned from. Rebecca, who made independent judgments that were usually right. Who was comfortable with ambiguity because she generated most of it. Who disagreed with authority so principally that authority eventually agreed with her just to stop the bleeding.

"I wrote what the position requires," she said, but the sentence sounded different now.

Gerald shrugged. "You wrote what the position looked like when someone good was in it. That's not the same thing." He tapped the paper. "A blueprint says what the building needs to do. This says what the last building looked like. You're not hiring. You're trying to get her back."

The committee re-posted with nine criteria, six of which were new. Four applicants from the original pool reapplied. Two of them matched.

Neither one reminded her of Rebecca. She hired them both.
