That was eleven years ago.
The Zurich talk went beautifully. She knew because she could tell from the quality of the silence — not the polite hush of people checking their phones under the table, but the dense quiet of two hundred people tracking the same argument at the same speed. She hit her marks. The slide transitions landed. She didn’t tell him that three years ago, working through the proof again for the book manuscript, she’d found a gap. Not an error — the theorem held. But the gap was in the motivation, in the part she’d once believed was the point. The anomalous data that had caught her breath in Göttingen — she now understood it could be explained more simply. The phenomenon was real but the interpretation she’d built her career on was one of several equally valid readings, and probably not the most natural one.
The result still stood. It was correct, useful, cited. No one needed to retract anything. It was just that the thing she’d been saying for eleven years — that this was the framework — had quietly become a thing she was saying because she’d been saying it for eleven years.
She’d tried, once, to restructure the talk. To present the result more modestly, as one approach among several. But the modest version was worse. The audience’s attention wavered. The Q&A was scattered. A colleague had pulled her aside afterward and said, “Are you feeling all right?”
So she went back to the version that worked.
The walk to the hotel took her along the Limmat. The river was dark and fast. In Göttingen, she’d lost her place because she was overwhelmed by what the data meant. In Zurich, she never lost her place. She knew exactly where she was.
