Contact

The line ran horizontal across the outcrop, sharp as a knife. Below it: tilted limestone, gray-green, full of crinoid stems and brachiopod fragments, the compressed floor of a shallow sea. Above it: flat sandstone, red-brown, barren, deposited by a river that hadn’t existed when the limestone was forming.

Between them: nothing. Forty million years of nothing.

Noor had been mapping unconformities for nine years. She could read the ones that announced themselves—the Great Unconformity at the base of the Grand Canyon, where a billion years vanished into a single surface you could put your hand on. Those were legible. The scale was so large it became almost abstract, a number you cited in papers but didn’t feel.

This one she felt. The limestone below was Devonian. The sandstone above was Carboniferous. The gap between them held the entire Late Devonian extinction—eighty percent of marine species, gone—and the slow recovery afterward, and whatever came next, all eroded away, leaving only the contact surface. A seam where two worlds met and everything between them had been carried off by water and wind.

Her students called it the contact. Geologists always did. The word bothered her in a way she hadn’t been able to articulate until Thomas, her colleague from sedimentology, pointed out that “contact” implied a relationship. Two things touching. But what made the unconformity an unconformity was the absence of contact—the missing third thing, the time that should have connected them and didn’t.

“It’s not a surface,” Thomas said once, tracing it with his thumb. “It’s a question. What was here?”

“Erosion,” Noor said. “We know what happened. The sea withdrew, the land rose, weathering removed the upper strata.”

“We know the mechanism. I’m asking what was here.”

She looked at the line. Below it: organisms with names, counted, classified, drawn in textbooks. Above it: different organisms, also named. Between: whatever lived during those forty million years, whatever grew and ate and reproduced and died in whatever landscape existed here, all of it removed so completely that the removal itself had become a surface.

That was the part that unsettled her. The unconformity wasn’t empty—it was full of absence. Every organism that lived in the eroded interval had existed exactly as thoroughly as the crinoids preserved below it. They had been equally real. They had simply been in the wrong place: the part of the column that time chose to erase rather than compress.

Her PhD advisor had used the phrase “non-deposition” for intervals where sediment never accumulated. Noor preferred “non-preservation.” Deposition was about the material. Preservation was about what survived.

She’d been thinking about this since March, when her mother died and she’d gone through the house. Her mother had kept journals—not consistently, but in bursts. There were years with daily entries and years with nothing. The empty years weren’t empty years. They were the years her mother had been too busy living to write anything down.

The journals with entries were the limestone: compressed life, readable, full of fragments you could identify. The empty years were the unconformity. Not nothing, but nothing preserved. The fullest years, maybe—the ones so saturated with living that none of it precipitated into text.

Noor ran her finger along the contact surface. It was smooth. Erosion had polished it before the sandstone buried it, and then three hundred million years of pressure had finished the job. She wondered what a finger running along this surface would have felt if you could have stood here during the gap—during the unconformity itself, while it was happening. You wouldn’t have known you were standing in an absence. You would have been standing on ground. The ground would have been covered in whatever grew there. There would have been weather.

It was only from here, from the future, looking back at the column, that the gap became visible. The organisms of the missing interval didn’t know they were missing. They were just alive, in a place that wouldn’t keep them.

She pulled out her field notebook and wrote: Devonian-Carboniferous unconformity, ~40 Ma gap, contact sharp, planar, no basal conglomerate. The usual notation. The kind of sentence that turned forty million years into a line on a page.

Thomas would say: that’s the limestone talking. The part that got preserved. The part that can be read.

She closed the notebook and put her hand flat on the surface and held it there, not measuring, not describing, not recording. Just touching the place where the record stopped and the world kept going.
